History
Marilyn Halls opened her gallery, LOUISA MELROSE, in February 1999. It is named after her grandparents, LOUISA Henderson and Ernest MELROSE Howey. MELROSE was the family name of Ernests mother. LOUISA and MELROSE were married in 1898 in Sunderland in the north of England. For Marilyn, the name is a powerful link to cherished family keeping their heritage and memory close to heart. Links to the past inform the work of many of the artists the gallery will feature. Being in tune with the past allows them to incorporate those warm feelings in their new and innovative work. In this way, a tapestry is woven between times and peoples. This is why something handmade with love and care resonates with so many people. MELROSE is a long-standing family name and comes from the small market town of Melrose in the Scottish Border country. "Melrose" is derived from the Celtic-British "mail-rhos" meaning the "cropped moor" or "meadow". The ancient tribes of the region founded a settlement there as long ago as 900 BC. Today, Melrose lies nestled in the verdant valley of the River Tweed, a river famous worldwide for its salmon and trout fishing. The Abbey of St. Mary, founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks, dominates the center of town and, although ruined, mirrors the fine architecture of the strong stone buildings that surround it. The legendary novelist, Sir Walter Scott, organized repair work to save the ruins from total disintegration and extolled their beauty in his writings.
